| The New 2011 CPT Codes for Paraesophageal Hiatal Hernia Repair Codes Differs from (transabdominal, thoracotomy and thoracoabdominal incision) approach. With or Without Implantation of Mesh. |
Paraesophageal hiatal hernia occurs when the stomach rotates up through the diaphragm to lie
within the chest beside the esophagus.
There 6 new codes added as part of 2011 CPT Changes for Paraesophageal Hiatal Repair.
These changes differs based on the surgical approach or technique used
(transabdominal/laparotomy, diaphragmatic/thoracotomy/transthroracic, and thoracoabdominal
incision), and also whethere the surgery involved mesh implantation.
For your Paraesophageal hiatal hernia repair (transabdominal, laparotomy), refer to 43332,
43333
43332 - Repair, paraesophageal hiatal hernia (including fundoplication), via laparotomy, except
neonatal; without implantation of mesh or other prosthesis
43333 - with implantation of mesh or other prosthesis
For your (diaphragmatic, thoracotomy, transthoracic) hernia repair look up 43334, 43335
43334 - Repair, paraesophageal hiatal hernia (including fundoplication), via thoracotomy, except
neonatal; without implantation of mesh or other prosthesis
43335 - with implantation of mesh or other prosthesis
For your Paraesophageal hiatal hernia repair (thoracoabdominal incision)
43336 - Repair, paraesophageal hiatal hernia (including fundoplication), via thoracoabdominal
incision, except neonatal; without implantation of mesh or other prosthesis
43337 - with implantation of mesh or other prosthesis
Another NEW CODE (an add-on code):
+43338 Esophageal lengthening procedure (eg. Collis gastroplasty or wedge gastroplasty).
** Because this is an add on code, it can not be a "stand-alone" code. Use this code in
conjuction with 43332-43337 and 43280)
